Overwiew :Steven Lidz lives a happy and secure life in the home of his loving mother and inventor father in 1962 Los Angeles. However, things take a tragic turn when his mom, Selma, becomes terminally ill with cancer. Because Steven's father can't bring himself to deal honestly with Selma's impending death, Steven chooses to live with his two eccentric uncles, Danny and Arthur. While Danny suffers from paranoia and sees anti-Semitic conspiracies everywhere, Arthur is a childlike pack rat who has filled their apartment with stacks of newspapers and hundreds of small items he's found in the streets. Despite their strange lifestyles, the uncles manage to usher Steven through this difficult period of his life, and find a creative way of dealing with his grief. Adapted from the touching childhood memoirs of Franz Lidz. Academy Award Nomination: Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.

Starring : Andie MacDowell, John Turturro, Michael Richards, Maury Chaykin, Celia Weston

www.filmcritic.com - : Diane Keaton's directorial feature film debut is a very impressive one. Unstrung Heroes is a smart, bittersweet drama about a boy growing up in postwar suburbia. 12-year old Steven Lidz (Nathan Watt) is surrounded by his inventor father (John Turturro) and nearly-insane uncles Danny and Arthur (Seinfeld's Michael Richards and Maury Chaykin). When his mother Selma (Andie McDowell) develops cancer from her chain smoking, Steven's life begins to slowly unravel.  more...
www.boxoffice.com - : There's a moment near the conclusion of this Hollywood Pictures production that finds a young mother, Selma Lidz (Andie MacDowell), sitting at her dining room table, alone with her thoughts. Apricot-hued daylight is dappling her, with one sunbeam accenting an outstretched leg. Secretly watching her, trying to find the courage to ask whether it's true she's dying, is her 12-year-old son, Steven (Nathan Watt). As caught by cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, the scene is almost fragrant with the maternal and mammalian. Directed by, say, ''Red's'' Krzysztof Kieslowski, it would also be frought with their contraries: pain and death.  more...
