www.eonline.com - : Brooke Shields is a caustic, self-involved B-movie actress. Wait! Stop the lawsuit--that's the character she's portraying here. It's fun watching her trade barbs with her equally self-involved ma, Gena Rowlands. For these two--and the six others gathered at a lovely home in upstate New York--their Weekend in the country ain't such a walk in the park. The specter of Tony (D.B. Sweeney)--who died a year earlier--hangs over the affair, stirring up tensions between old and new friends and lovers. The film never quite escapes that adapted-from-a-novel feel (it is), and the emerging conflicts aren't always as well-woven as they might be. But there are plenty of moving moments and words of wisdom in this meaningful meditation on loss. And the attractive cast (did we mention Brooke Shields?) is uniformly strong (did we mention Gena Rowlands?). And really, who wouldn't want to spend a weekend with them? more...
