www.filmcritic.com - : For the record, I'm suspicious of any film that claims to be based on ''true events.'' The opening credits for The Exorcism of Emily Rose tell us that it is based on the true story of a priest accused of negligent homicide resulting from an exorcism gone bad. Really, unless you lived it yourself, how do you actually know what happened? So many made-for-entertainment movies are guilty of stretching reality so thin that it's difficult to trust the ''truth'' that is told to us. Some subjects are just better told as documentaries. more...

www.hollywoodreporter.com - : ''The Exorcism of Emily Rose'' is an uneasy hybrid of horror, courtroom drama and true-life story. It's loosely based on events surrounding Anneliese Michel, a teenager who died during an exorcism ceremony in Germany in the mid-1970s. Director Scott Derrickson (''Hellraiser: Inferno'') updates Michel's story to modern America and focuses on the trial of a priest who is prosecuted for causing the death of the girl here renamed Emily. The tale of Emily's alleged possession is told in flashback, while the courtroom sequences are used to debate the validity of supernatural beliefs in the face of scientific evidence. Standard horror cliches are scattered throughout. more...

metromix.chicagotribune.com - : ''The Exorcism of Emily Rose,'' much of which unfolds in the least photogenic courtroom in the history of courtroom drama, reminds you how strikingly similar Laura Linney and Campbell Scott are on screen. They're similar sorts of fine actors, whatever their surroundings. Both have big, piercing eyes and jawlines you can trace at 40 paces; both are stage-trained and favor a crisp, clipped, slightly heightened way with dialogue; both convey a slight air of imperiousness, and also of watchfulness—as if they have the edge on a situation they cannot trust. They're very interesting and not just in the right roles; often, they redeem routine ones. more...

www.eonline.com - : Though based on a true story, don't expect Emily Rose to exorcise anyone's memory of the classic Exorcist. A college student, allegedly possessed by demons, dies while in the care of family priest Tom Wilkinson. So, the collared father faces murder charges (but isn't possession nine-tenths of the law?). Anyhoo, man of faith Campbell Scott plays prosecutor, while hotshot attorney Laura Linney, an agnostic, is chosen for defense. Oh, the sinister irony. Creepy and shrieking flashbacks of Emily's possession and exorcism are interwoven with intriguing trial scenes that present scientific and religious arguments for her condition. But Rose withers outside that realm of spirited spiritual debate. Though Linney's the lead, we learn precious little about her character except she's ambitious and, once the trial starts, hears bumps in the night, although the films fails to investigate that. By failing to mine deeper emotional and psychological territory, this exorcism flick never fully possesses its audience. more...
