www.eonline.com - : When last we visited the Puritans, Demi Moore was raising eyebrows in old Boston town. But anyone expecting this Crucible to resemble that abominable Scarlet Letter is in for blessed relief. Arthur Miller penned the trenchant screen adaptation from his play, and Hytner (The Madness of King George) is an inspired choice for director, given his affinity for stage material. Ryder and Allen shine amid the witch-hunt intrigue, with Ryder particularly conniving. Alas, Day-Lewis is this film's worst failing. His noble farmer looks too much the renegade mountain man and never really seems to believe the lines he speaks. In Salem, they hanged people for lesser infractions. more...
