Overwiew :Salem, Massachusetts, 1692. Perched on the edge of a continent is a community dedicated to the service of God. A gang of teenage girls, stifled by the crushing piety of their elders, dance naked in the woods. One girl, Abigail Williams -- her innocence lost in the bed of John Proctor, a married farmer -- drinks a charm to kill his wife. And suddenly, the Devil is loose in Salem. The girls are discovered and, spurred on by their terrified accusations, the entire village is consumed by cries of witchcraft. One by one, the blameless victims of mass hysteria are torn from their homes until, inexorably, Abigail's vengeance is turned on Proctor's wife.

Directors : Nicholas Hytner

www.eonline.com - : When last we visited the Puritans, Demi Moore was raising eyebrows in old Boston town. But anyone expecting this Crucible to resemble that abominable Scarlet Letter is in for blessed relief. Arthur Miller penned the trenchant screen adaptation from his play, and Hytner (The Madness of King George) is an inspired choice for director, given his affinity for stage material. Ryder and Allen shine amid the witch-hunt intrigue, with Ryder particularly conniving. Alas, Day-Lewis is this film's worst failing. His noble farmer looks too much the renegade mountain man and never really seems to believe the lines he speaks. In Salem, they hanged people for lesser infractions.  more...  A-
