www.hollywoodreporter.com - : If you're going to see a movie titled ''The 40-Year-Old Virgin,'' you know one thing for certain: The guy is going to get laid. You might wish that it happens earlier than it does in this film, created by screenwriter-producer Judd Apatow, making his feature debut, and actor-comedian Steve Carell. If it had, this would have forced someone to think of a new joke. Sticking to one joke in an unconscionably long film makes for a very stale, witless and repetitive comedy. more...

www.filmcritic.com - : In The 40 Year-Old Virgin, budding comedian Steve Carell plays a geeky middle-aged virgin. This is not a stretch for Carell, because in his acting career, he really is a virgin. Until his breakthrough role in this film, Carell long roamed the desolate comedic sidelines behind bigger names like Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey, and Jon Stewart. And yet, despite being relegated to small supporting roles, Carell has consistently and feverously out-shined and out-muscled his senior counterparts. Now, with Virgin, Carell proves that he's got the stamina to go the distance in his first leading role. more...

www.eonline.com - : Love is in the air...but Steve Carell ain't gettin' any. He's a total geek and an expert on all things Six Million Dollar Man and Aquaman. But when it comes to the ladies, he's suffering a long dry spell--40 years to be exact. So, when his loser pals find out he's never gotten any, they rally behind the cause. He eventually lands a relationship with Catherine Keener, and the two go about trying to satisfy each other's needs, though they're clearly not the same thing. Carell provides more than enough pizzazz and boyishness to make this work as a comedy and a bit of a charmer. While the tone harkens back to the '80s comedy days of, say, Porky's, Carell and the crew sell the material. So, it seems funnier than it probably should be. Save yourself...for a night at the movies with this Virgin. more...
