Rustin (2001)

Release Date : 18 June 2001
Runtime : 101 min

Overwiew :Rick Johnson directs and stars in this small town drama about a man who is forced to confront some uncomfortable issues when his past comes back to haunt him. Billy Stagen (Johnson) appears to have it all. A former pro football player, Billy has returned to his hometown of Rustin, Alabama, to become the town's sheriff. But when a mysterious teenager arrives in town, Billy's perfect world begins to crumble. Well aware that he has made plenty of mistakes in the past, Billy also recognizes that underneath his strong external facade is a troubled man who doesn't consider himself to be the hero that the rest of the community thinks he is. Johnson's tender drama is well-acted, thoughtful, and thoroughly enjoyable.

  Critic Reviews  Grade
onfilm.chicagoreader.com - : An eye-opening documentary (2003) by Nancy Kates and Bennett Singer about the most sophisticated and charismatic of the civil rights leaders, enhanced by insights about why he became the most neglected. A onetime singer in Josh White's quartet, the Carolinians, a communist between 1938 and '41, and a conscientious objector imprisoned during World War II, Rustin (1912-'87) helped to school Martin Luther King in pacifism--and persuaded him at an early stage not to own guns. Ultimately Rustin was driven to the margins of the movement for being outspokenly gay and for refusing (on tactical grounds) to oppose the war in Vietnam. Without overemphasizing either of these factors, this intelligently balanced account offers a complex and nuanced portrait of a complex and nuanced individual. 84 min.  more...
