www.eonline.com - : A bleak chapter in American history, the 1923 massacre of the innocent people of Rosewood, Florida, is a true story of out-of-control racism and stirring heroism. Director Singleton (Boyz N the Hood) shows how a white woman's false accusation ends with an angry white mob hunting down and burning out residents of a thriving African-American community. Although the movie's brutality is sometimes tough to sit through, Singleton has made a major film that will be talked about for some time. Rhames and Cheadle are excellent as brave resisters, while Voight superbly plays the lone white man with conscience. Intelligent and challenging, thrilling and disturbing, Rosewood gets off to a slow start, but soon becomes a cinematic tragedy.  more...  A-
