Unlike past versions of this star-crossed tale, this Shakespearean takeoff is pumped with everything a kid could want: Kung Fu, hip-hop, Matrix-style effects and a beautiful Juliet. Unfortunately, it's also overstuffed with so-so melodrama. Black and Asian gangs control the Bay Area's waterfront under an uneasy arrangement--until the sons of the faction heads get killed. And while there's plenty of gunplay, macho posturing and loud explosions, the only time the film shows any moves is when Li, as a Hong Kong escapee out to avenge his brother's death, is onscreen. His fight work and chemistry with costar Aaliyah are the only reasons Romeo doesn't arrive DOA. more...
