Molokai: The Story of Father Damien (1999)

Release Date : 17 March 1999
Rating : PG

Overwiew :Inspiring true story follows the epic life of Father Damien (Wenham), a legendary Belgian priest who dedicated his life (quite literally) to the care and spiritual guidance of a doomed Hawaiian leper colony during the late 1800s. Faced with appallingly daunting conditions--symptoms ignored, food stolen from the sick, the weak forced into slavery, diseased girls forced into prostitution--the priest supported himself through his sense of justice and his unwavering faith. A counterpart of other beneficent luminaries such as Mother Theresa and Gandhi, Damien's story speaks of the triumph of the human and the indomitable force of one man's will to do what is morally and spiritually right in a beautiful, alien world. Spectacular scenery and panoramic Hawaiian vistas add a particularly aesthetic pleasure to the story. Screenplay by John Briley, the scribe responsible for GANDHI.

Starring : Derek Jacobi, Sam Neill, Alice Krige, David Wenham, Kris Kristofferson

Directors : Paul Cox

efilmcritic.com - : Occasionally, the making of a film is so catastrophic that it transcends the drama unfolding on screen. Director Paul Cox has withheld the full details of his battle with Molokai’s Belgian producers for legal reasons. Suffice it to say, their relationship was stormy. The producers fired him after filming wrapped, but Cox regained control of the negative and recut Molokai into the version now on release in Australia.  more...
www.christiananswers.net - : The movie begins with the arrest of a young girl who has leprosy and her subsequent expulsion to the leper colony on the island of Molokai. Shortly after, young Father Damien volunteers to go to Molokai to take the message of Christ to a virtually lawless inhumane society where young girls are used or forced into prostitution and alcohol is used to drown the pain of leprosy.  more...
