www.boxoffice.com - : The re-teaming of ''Breaking Away'' writer Steve Tesich with director Peter Yates pays off handsomely with ''Eyewitness'', a twisty and sharp thriller. William Hurt plays a janitor infatuated with TV newsbabe Sigourney Weaver. When an executive is murdered in Hurt's building and Weaver arrives to cover it, he pretends to know more than he does to keep her interested. The screw tightens when Weaver's boyfriend, played by Christopher Plummer, cares more about what Hurt knows of the murder than whether he's having an affair with his girlfriend. Eventually, journalist and janitor team up to solve the murder, which makes sense since so much TV news is garbage anyway. Director Yates has never been acknowledged as a particularly great director, but he's done some terrific movies, including ''Breaking Away'', ''Bullitt'' and ''The Deep.'' Here, he's in genre mode, but it works and the movie maintains interest. Add yeoman's work from Weaver, Hurt and James Woods, you've got a solid little whodunit. Also, look for Morgan Freeman, in one of his earliest movie roles. more...
