www.eonline.com - : And you thought algebra drove you crazy? Try attempting to crack an equation while a military man barks orders in your ear. That's exactly what's going on in this true-life tale of Nobel Prize-winning--and schizophrenic--mathematician John Nash. Russell Crowe plays Nash's numbers game and goes for a repeat Oscar run with true thespian mettle--bouncing from schizo to sane genius and back again. Jennifer Connelly is a delightful accoutrement as Nash's adoring wife, while Ed Harris captivatingly lurks in the shadows as a Defense Department operative and Paul Bettany (who gave a saucy turn as Chaucer in A Knight's Tale) again jousts with literary wit as the math-dork's college roommate. Director Ron Howard does a yeoman's job of blurring the lines of perceived reality, even if some of Nash's story is whitewashed and the wrap-up feels somewhat cheap and manipulative. Nonetheless, Crowe and crew deliver top-flight performances to keep the madness gripping. more...
