Overwiew :New York's East Village was a hotbed of speed-fueled creativity, cross-dressing, and tawdry glamour in the 1960s and '70s and drag superstar Jackie Curtis was one of its most innovative and dynamic stars. Craig Highberger's documentary SUPERSTAR IN A HOUSEDRESS takes a witty, loving look at the talented playwright, actor, poet, and all-around diva who played a key role in Andy Warhol's factory scene. Curtis is captured here in clips from Paul Morrissey films like FLESH (1968) and WOMEN IN REVOLT (1971) with costars Candy Darling and Joe Delassandro, along with rare B&W video footage from classic off-off-Broadway musicals he wrote and starred in like GLAMOUR, GLORY AND GOLD and VAIN VICTORY at La MaMa and the Playhouse of the Ridiculous. Talking heads include narrator Lily Tomlin along with Penny Arcade, Joe Franklin, Harvey Fierstein, Holly Woodlawn, and Village Voice columnist Michael Musto. Highberger's documentary is an eye-opening, often hilarious portrait of a pivotal taboo-smashing figure (Curtis was a six-foot-tall male with "the shoulders of a linebacker" who, in trying "not trying to look real," ushered in a whole new form of drag performance). The film also shows a changing time in downtown New York's history, one which Curtis perfectly embodies--the transition between the "tough-guy" Lower East Side sailor-dancer-hostess world of the '40s and '50s and the camp decadence of the '60s and '70s.
