The Evolution of Mobile Networks

mobile networks

Did you know that the first mobile network was launched in Japan back in 1979? It was operational in Tokyo in the beginning, but due to its popularity, it has expanded in the entire country in less than five years. 1G was an analog cellular network, and data transfer speeds were under 3 Kbps. Yes, you needed about three minutes to download an image over 1G.

2G networks were available in Finland at first, in 1991. Unlike 1G, they encrypted phone conversations and boosted speeds to 40 Kbps. Later on, the Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) technology increased 2G speeds to 384 Kbps.

The main goal of the third generation of wireless technology was to improve speed. The Internet was booming, and mobile users wanted to get access to high-quality multimedia experiences without waiting too much. While the first 3G networks offered speeds of 144 Kbps, the 3.5G version powered mobile Internet connections with speeds of up to 1 Mbps.

4G was launched in 2009, reaching real-life speeds of up to 40 Mbps. With 4G LTE Advanced, the peak download limit has been increased to 1,000 Mbps, while the peak upload limit has been upped to 500 Mbps.

5G is the next-generation wireless network, and it will bump maximum data transfer speeds to 10 Gbps. This impressive performance is only going to be achievable in densely populated urban areas, though, where there are lots of mini cell towers. Still, even people in rural areas will see significant performance improvements.
