I saw this movie at a preview at which Ms. Theron and Mr. Stahl appeared for a Q&A. They both seemed to be very emotionally and honestly behind the story and the acting job of both (as a sister and brother) was excellent, as was that of Ms. Robb (as her daughter/his niece), Mr. Hopper (their father) and Mr. St. Patrick (as the sympathetic local cop). But in the end the story was much too thin sustain the work. The supposed dream sequence (Ms. Robb at a motel pool) was a "what the heck is this?" rather than a true "coming of age" moment. And we are not given much to allow us to understand the meanness of Dad, or why brother and sister find themselves in the harsh circumstances we see them in. Two stars for the acting and cinematography but zip for the tale.
