www.qwipster.net - : Halloween set the formula for almost every slasher movie that followed it, from Friday the 13th to A Nightmare on Elm Street to I Know What You Did Last Summer. On that note, I’m not sure whether to praise it or condemn it, but regardless; it’s still the best of the bunch. Shot for a mere $300,000, it definitely has a small-budget look and feel to it, but that’s also part of its charm, I suppose. For all of its vaunted landmarks within the genre, I must admit, I don’t consider Halloween to be an especially well-made film in the end.   more...  3/5
www.toxicuniverse.com - : John Carpenter's Halloween is a revolutionary film for several reasons. First, it proved the success of independent film and, second, it gave birth to the slasher genré. In the years since the release of Halloween, dozens of films have tried to recapture its impact, but few have succeeded. Why? Because the later films, even the Halloween sequels, have made the mistake of trying to top their creator. It's not about genuine scares anymore; instead, the focus has been put on more blood and shock value. The reason why Halloween worked so well was because it featured neither of those things. It was more interested in working on our internal fears rather than our senses.  more...  4/5
goatdog.com - : John Carpenter's Halloween was one of the first and the flat-out best of that ghetto of the horror film genre, the slasher movie. It is also arguably the best horror film ever made, and it is also a great movie on any scale. It causes an agonizing tension that starts in the first frames and doesn't let up until the credits roll. Or even further, since you have to consider the prospect of sleeping in a dark room at some point after you see it.  more...  5/5
