www.epinions.com - : Now if only the film wasn't so boring! ''The Last Emperor'' isn't quite as dull as the Cage-Ryan sleeper ''City of Angels''. It is twice as long, however, making it deserving of one Academy Award that it did not win: The Toughest Sit. The film's ultimate failure (it was an expensive box office stiff, at least in the U.S.) is probably due to the casting, script, and direction. Something is just lacking in those areas. The acting is often wooden, particularly from John Lone, who has the leading role. more...

rogerebert.suntimes.com - : ''The Last Emperor'' ends with an extraordinary sequence, beyond the end, in which an elderly Pu Yi goes to visit the Forbidden City, which is now open to tourists. But the old man who was once the boy on that throne looks on, now, with a complex mixture of emotions. more...

www.apolloguide.com - : The story of Pu Yi, China's last emperor, is fascinating. He came to the throne at the age of three, with a staff of 1,200 eunuchs and the adulation of half a billion people. When he was still a child, the Chinese Republic was formed and a political deal saved his title and wealth, but effectively imprisoned him forever in the Forbidden City. His story as an adult is marked by abdication, misguided alliance with the Japanese, judgement by Communist China, and his days as a gardener in 1960s Beijing. more...
