www.reel.com - : Spelling is hot. In the popular imagination, at least, if not necessarily in reality, kids who can master the intricacies of the English language are superstars. The 2002 documentary Spellbound followed teenagers on the way to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., and it was a box-office hit and an Academy Award Nominee. In 2005, The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee racked up six Tony nominations, including Best Musical, winning another two awards. Last fall, David Siegel and Scott McGehee brought Myla Goldberg's bestselling Bee Season to the big screen. Akeelah and the Bee, an engaging story of a little girl who learns to dream big, is the latest drama hoping to spell its way to success. more...

www.hybridmagazine.com - : Ah, the competition movie, an oft-recycled plot structure in the realm of Hollywood cinema. It usually involves a working-class or lower middle-class youth, with a natural talent or ability for something, with dreams of bigger and better things—getting a good education, going to college, achieving a dream. Then our plucky protagonist enters a competition and is suddenly a small fish in a big pond. But the plucky protagonist is our underdog, and even though the odds are against him/her, he/she has the drive to succeed and gets past the early rounds. Of course there’s some tension along the way, perhaps with some family members, rivals, people who don’t believe in our plucky protagonist. The final round comes and well, you know it’s Hollywood cinema people, how do you think it will end? more...

www.boxoffice.com - : Eleven-year-old vocabulary prodigy Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) at first shrugs off her uncanny ability to memorize, comprehend and, most impressively, spell some of the most daunting polysyllabics to take up space in the OED. She doesn't see how being ridiculed as a ''brainiac'' is going to do anything but make her already troubled urban existence that much worse. Fortunately, she has an encouraging best friend who enthuses that ''if I could spell like you, I could be a flight attendant'' (however that connects), and a stuffy but caring language coach (Lawrence Fishburne) who ''will brook no nonsense,'' but will do everything in his power to help Akeelah reach her full potential. The neighbors also get caught up in the excitement of one of their own making a name for herself, and even the local thug quickly gets the hang of flashcard tutorials. more...
