Overwiew :John Wayne is Jacob McCandles, an aging cowboy in an Old West that is on the verge of modernization. When his eight-year-old grandson is kidnapped by a violent gang led by the evil John Fain (Richard Boone), Jacob's estranged wife (Maureen O' Hara) enlists his help to rescue the boy. Jacob and his three sons (one of whom is portrayed by Wayne's real-life son Patrick) set out to bring the gang to justice. This late-period Wayne western is characterized by a gritty realism not present in most of his earlier works. The surprisingly graphic violence is also tempered with abundant humor.

Starring : John Wayne, Richard Boone, Maureen O'Hara, Bobby Vinton, Patrick Wayne

Directors : George Sherman

Producers : Michael Wayne

www.movieeye.com - : In ''Big Jake,'' actor John Wayne gets to do something I imagine a great many fathers would like to do as well: punch his son in the face. Wayne stars as Jake McCandles, also known as Big Jake, a rough and gruff frontiersman who, in the face of early technological development in the 1900's, refuses to conform to the new wave. Thought to be dead by his friends and enemies, he returns from the countryside when he finds out that his grandson (played by John Ethan Wayne) has been kidnapped. Enlisting the help of his two sons (one of whom is Wayne's other son, Patrick), he rides off on his horse in pursuit of the kidnappers, while the law trails behind in automobiles.  more...
efilmcritic.com - : The Old West is about over, things are on the verge of modernization, and that's not an easy thing for a cowboy to adjust to, especially one like Jacob McCandles (John Wayne). He's of the old school, rough and tumble.  more...
efilmcritic.com - : Big Jake was made near the end of John Wayne’s legendary career. It was the fifth and final time he played opposite the beautiful Maureen O’Hara. Two of his real life sons also appear in the movie. Patrick Wayne plays one of Big Jake’s sons and Ethan Wayne plays his grandson.  more...
