Overwiew :The rural town of Bixby, Oklahoma, doesn't have a lot to offer the kids that are stuck growing up there. In TEX, the poignant coming-of-age story based on S.E. Hinton's novel of the same name, Tex McCormick (Matt Dillon) and Mason McCormick (Jim Metzler) are two very different brothers forced to survive when their burnt-out rodeo cowboy father (Bill McKinney) deserts them. After his departure, the boys must face the hardships of running a household and making some tough decisions. Mason is a star basketball player eager to escape the confines of the small town, but forced into the fatherly role of looking after the younger, hapless Tex. Considering himself a fourth generation cowboy, Tex is happiest when he's riding his horse. He parties with the locals, plays pranks in school, flirts with his best friend's (Emilio Estevez) sister (Meg Tilly) and doesn't take life seriously. When Mason is forced to sell Tex's beloved horse to pay household bills, Tex must learn how to accept the loss and forgive his older brother. The two boys are drawn closer by the sudden appearance of their delinquent father and a series of life-threatening events that reminds them that they're all the family they've got. |

rogerebert.suntimes.com - : There is a shock of recognition almost from the beginning of TEX, because we're listening to the sound of American voices in an authentically American world, the world of teenage boys trying to figure things out and make the right decisions. The voices sound right but may be a little unfamiliar, because adolescents on television are often made to talk in pseudo-hip sitcom nonspeak. Here in TEX are the clear voices of two young men who are worthy of attention. Their names are Tex and Mason. They're brothers, one about eighteen, the other fourteen and a half. They live by themselves in a rundown house on some land outside a rural suburb of Tulsa. Their father is a rodeo cowboy who hardly ever stops in at home and forgets to send money for weeks at a time. These two kids are raising themselves and doing a pretty good job of it. more...

movies.yahoo.com - : Plot: The only one of the popular S.E. Hinton books to be filmed by Disney, this is a bit glossier than the two directed by Francis Ford Coppola (''The Outsiders'' and ''Rumble Fish''), but still a very frank and gritty story about two brothers who have to take care of themselves and each other while their father is on the road. Mason (Jim Metzler) is a senior, a basketball star, dedicated and responsible. Tex (Matt Dillon) is fifteen, unsure of himself, not yet ready to focus on the problems they face. His horse, Rowdy, is the center of his world. As the movie begins, they are out of money, out of food, and the gas has been turned off. It has been four months since they heard from their father, who is traveling with the rodeo. Mason sells their horses to get money for food. Tex is furious, throws things, and wrestles angrily with his brother. more...
