Overwiew :This violent drama is based on an allegedly historic encounter between white settlers and the Cheyenne Indians, of the west. Based on Theodore V. Olsen’s novel ARROW IN THE SUN, the account enacts the struggle of a U.S. soldier named Honus Gant (Peter Strauss) and a white woman named Cresta (Candice Bergen) who has been captured by the Indians two years earlier. The pair is hoping to stay alive until they can reach the nearest army outpost. When the Cheyenne slaughter the paymaster’s party, with which they have been traveling, the two carry on to encounter several unusual characters. Donald Pleasance is perfect in his portrayal of Isaac Q. Cumber, who holds them captive, while hoping to sell the Cheyenne guns, in order to acquire some of gold they stole from the paymaster. When Honus is wounded, Cresta goes ahead alone, only to discover that the army plans to wipe the Indians out entirely. She hopes to return to help Honus, and warn the Cheyenne to flee, before the handful of them that are left, are wiped out. Ralph Nelson directs, and keeps the allegiances even, revealing the true tragedy behind the conflict.

Starring : Candice Bergen, Peter Strauss, Donald Pleasence, John Anderson, Jorge Rivero

Directors : Ralph Nelson

Producers : Gabriel Katzka, Joseph E. Levine, William S. Gilmore

www.videovista.net - : I'd forgotten how good this was. It's an unusual mix of tragedy, extreme violence and comedy-romance that divided audiences and the critics. In the wake of The Wild Bunch, Ralph Nelson's Soldier Blue was released in the very same year as comparable maverick-auteur classics M*A*S*H and Catch-22. It was denounced as just another example of pretentious, politically-aware twaddle by some, but praised by others for its bravery in taking a determined left wing stance against the sickeningly amoral violence of US foreign policy. In fact, today as then, this nearly 25-year-old movie is one that seems designed to split middle class viewers' opinions.  more...
www.channel4.com - : Bergen is the woman kidnapped by Indians and Strauss the US soldier trekking through the desert with her to try to reach an army outpost. When Bergen stumbles across an army plot to wipe out a group of Indians, she is determined to do something about it. Based on the real life Sand Creek Massacre, at which hundreds of Indians, including children, were wiped out, Soldier Blue certainly has its heart in the right place. However, the developing romance between Bergen and Strauss quickly turns stale, and the portrayal of the final massacre is done without the subtlety or insight it deserves.  more...
