Imagining Argentina (2003)

Release Date : 12 September 2003
Rating : R

Overwiew :Set in the magical backdrop of Buenes Aires, Argentina, IMAGINING ARGENTINA features an all-star cast that includes sultry Latin lover Antonio Banderas and esteemed British actress Emma Thompson. Adapted from the acclaimed novel by Lawrence Thornton, the narrative follows theatre director Carlos (Banderas) and his journalist wife Cecilia (Thompson) as they navigate the war-ridden country of the 1970s. When Cecilia is kidnapped by the military junta in power for writing oppositional pieces about their government, Carlos becomes plagued by 'visions' of his imprisoned wife and other dissidents who have 'disappeared.' A daring mixture of luscious magical realism and political commentary, IMAGINING ARGENTINA premiered at the world-renowned Venice Film Festival to great acclaim.

Starring : Antonio Banderas, Emma Thompson, Ruben Blades, Maria Canals, Kuno Becker

Directors : Christopher Hampton

www.iofilm.co.uk - : Set in 1970's Argentina when a military junta was in force, Christopher Hampton's harsh, harrowing film shows all too clearly the way a population can suffer at the hands of a dictatorship. As in Costa-Gavras's Missing, we see how easy it is for those who wish to engage in peaceful protest can ''disappear'', while behind the scenes, in ever-bulging makeshift prisons, torture, rape and abuse goes on.  more...
www.movie-gurus.com - : Have you ever heard of Imagining Argentina? Me neither, until I saw the new release listing. Believe it or not, it actually was released to theaters in 2004, of course it only lasted 14 days and took in less than $9,000 while playing on a single screen. Surprising considering it stars Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson, plus it was written and directed by Oscar winner Christopher Hampton. Anyway, let's take a look at the movie, which has a good concept, but the execution is such that I cannot really recommend it.  more...
