Overwiew :If anyone in Beverly Hills is clued in, it's Cher. She's almost 16, she's rich, she's way popular, and she loves letting the world benefit by her expertise in all of life's important issues--like dating, fashions and looking good. During this school year, however, Cher is going to feel her sense of control slipping as she discovers that the world is too chaotic to be manipulated by even someone as supremely clued in as she is. She's going to discover that, when it comes to matters of the heart, she's... clueless. |

The novel's scheming, social-climbing antagonist is transformed into the less malevolent Tai (Brittany Murphy)--for that matter, Cher is handsome and rich, but hardly clever--which leaves the plot somewhat rudderless. The hand-held camera was tilting crazily, showing the sun-blessed teenagers of Southern California, and I'm like - what is this, an MTV video? Then Cher says the line and breaks the ice. Not Cher who won the Oscar. Cher, the heroine of this movie. A little later, she explains that she and her friend Dionne ''were both named after great singers of the past that now do infomercials.'' (She adds, ''She's my friend because we both know what it is to have people be jealous of us.'') ''Clueless'' is a smart and funny movie, and the characters are in on the joke. Cher (Alicia Silverstone), who lives in a mansion and looks like Cybill Shepherd, is capable of lines like, ''Why learn to park when everry place you go has a valet?'' But she puts a little satirical spin on them. She is one of the most totally self-absorbed characters in a movie since the heroes of ''Wayne's World,'' and yet she isn't a victim, and we get the idea she willl grow up tough and clever, like her dad (Dan Hedaya). more...

movie-reviews.colossus.net - : As appealing as Alicia Silverstone is (and she possesses that ethereal ''star quality'' which is sadly lacking in many of today's up-and-coming performers), her presence can't quite elevate this breezy comedy to the level of a modern classic. A contemporary reworking of Jane Austen's Emma that is part pop satire and part teen comedy, Clueless shows its unevenness early, overcomes some flaws through vivacity and likability, then runs out of steam during the second half. Better than, but still similar in tone to The Brady Bunch Movie, this film contains its share of delightful scenes, but it's debatable whether there are enough to justify a feature-length running time.
