www.boxoffice.com - : Given the confluence of talent involved, ''From the Terrace'' never really had a chance of living up to expectations: Paul Newman and wife Joanne Woodward along with director Mark Robson and legendary screenwriter Ernest Lehman. The result, however, is far from poor. Adapted from the John O'Hara novel, it finds Robson seeking to replicate his ''Peyton Place'' success of three years earlier with an earnest melodrama with Newman playing the ambitious son of a wealthy Pennsylvania businessman. Nearly all such melodramatic soaps -- including television fare like ''Dallas'' and ''Dynasty'' -- are descended from ''Peyton Place,'' and that's clearly what Robson is aiming at here. Only he can do it better than others since he's mostly just imitating himself. The film never really takes flight like it should, but it offers more than enough juicy moments to sustain the lugubrious 144 minute running time. more...

www.digitallyobsessed.com - : From the Terrace is an overlong, occasionally tedious drama redeemed by the talents of Hollywood's most endearing couple both on screen and off, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. In their third film together, the blue-eyed legend portrays David Alfred Eaton, a young navy man returning home to Philadelphia following World War II. Most family reunions celebrating the safe return of a loved one from the battle lines are joyous occasions, but David's is bittersweet as he reunites with his fragile mother Martha (Myrna Loy), whose ongoing drinking problem has gotten to the point that she requires the services of a trained nurse 24/7. With her emotional state fueled by her uncaring, workaholic husband Samuel (Leon Ames), Martha has turned to another man for comfort, which doesn't exactly set up a warm-hearted reunion between father and son. more...

reviews.imdb.com - : Leon Ames is the owner of a large steel factory. Myrna Loy does a good imitation of Shelley Winters as his drunken, unloved, pathetic wife. Ames's eldest son died of spinal meningitis as a child, somehow making Ames bitter towards the rest of the family. Young, angst-ridden son Alfred (Paul Newman) returns from World War II, in time to quarrel with his father and beat up his mother's boyfriend. Refusing to work for his father, Newman instead partners with a friend designing aircraft. more...
