Overwiew :The third installment in the Boys Life series, following 1995's BOYS LIFE and 1997's BOYS LIFE 2, BOYS LIFE 3 consists of five short films, each telling a story related to gay life, identity, and sexuality. In French director David Fournier's MAJORETTES (a.k.a. DES MAJORETTES DANS L'ESPACE), an existential narrator talks over comic clips of film and illustrative cardboard cutouts. He tells a simple story of Dimitri, a soviet cosmonaut who likes majorettes, Catherine and Laurent who like making love, the Pope who likes airports, and Vincent who likes boys. HITCH by director Bradley Rust Gray follows two attractive men on a dizzying road trip that involves some sexual self-discovery. The Hollywood farce INSIDE OUT, from director Jason Gould, involves one slapstick joke after the next, hitting on psychotherapy, gay stereotypes, failed marriages, and tabloid sensationalism. JUST ONE TIME, a short film by Lane Janger that he later made into a feature-length film, is included here in its original format. And, wrapping up the filmic collage of BOYS LIFE 3 is director Gregory Cooke’s $30, a bittersweet story of a gay kid who faces a dilemma when his dad takes him to a whorehouse for his birthday. |

www.eonline.com - : This is (obviously) number three in the Boys Life series, which showcases short films dealing with the struggles of being gay. But is the third time a charm? Well...yes and no. This eclectic collection of five shorts starts strongly enough with a satirical commentary about sex roles called Majorettes in Space. And Jason Gould's autobiographical Inside Out, about living in the shadow of celebrity parents, is pleasantly amusing until it veers off track with a painfully goofy resolution. But the best is saved for last: $30 is a charming, bittersweet story about a gay male teen who visits a female prostitute (the terrific Sara Gilbert) paid for by his father. Too bad the rest of these shorts don't reach the same level of quality. more...

www.boxoffice.com - : These short films, grouped together based on their major or minor themes of homosexuality, look like term papers, and the longing to be expanded into a thesis is rooted in most of them. Indeed, the seven-minute quick trick ''Just One Time'' by Lane Janger has already been developed into a feature film and was recently given a limited released by Cowboy International. That success is undoubtedly due to its attractive cast and high-concept pitch line, because that's all it has going for it. more...
