www.eonline.com - : The crime? Turning Fyodor Dostoyevsky's classic novel into a glorified music video. The punishment? Um, that comes when you try to watch this modern-day adaptation of the murder and morality tale. Monica Keena (a Dawson's Creek-er with promise) has had enough of her slutty stepmom, drunken stepfather and creepy schoolmates. So, she convinces her nimrod boyfriend James DeBello to help her off dear old dad. Seems easy enough. But then director Rob Schmidt steps in, and the real bludgeoning begins. When he isn't hitting you over the head with religious imagery or hokey freeze-frame, slow-mo camera tricks, it's mouthfuls of dramatic, overzealous dialogue too old for these teen actors. The eerie soundtrack--including Moby, Frank Black, Sleater-Kinney, Modest Mouse and Wilco--is appropriate and the only good thing about this mess. more...
