Overwiew :James Garner stars as irritable fashion photographer Ben Morris in Delbert Mann's amusing adventure comedy. While working on assignment in the jungles of South America, shooting an ad campaign with model Alison Duquesne (Eva Renzi), his helicopter is stolen by reckless explorer Sammy Ryderbeit (George Kennedy). When they finally locate Sammy, who has crashed their helicopter, he tells them a wild story about a diamond mine in the area. Neither of them puts any credence in Sammy's tale until they find the body of the only man who knew the location of the mine, Captain Stopes (George Rose). Following Stopes' maps, the three begin the search for the mine, accompanied by Crowley (Nigel Green), Stopes' partner. Unwilling to share in the potential diamond haul, Crowley steals the supplies and mule train of the others, leaving them to die in the desert. But the nefarious prospector may have underestimated the magnitude of Sammy's greed. This comedy has some terrific moments, particularly in the comic interplay between the exasperated Garner and the wild-eyed Kennedy. |
