onfilm.chicagoreader.com - : James Garner represents an uneasy amalgam of the shuffling ineptitude of Elliott Gould and the southern California virility of Dick Powell in his portrayal of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe (1969). Freed from the often overpowering trappings of Chandler's knight (in his Rockford Files character), Garner has an easier time of it, sailing through an updating of Chandler's The Little Sister in suitably time-warped fashion. Slickly but not very memorably served up by director Paul Bogart; with Gayle Hunnicutt, Carroll O'Connor, Rita Moreno, Jackie Coogan, and Bruce Lee.  more...
www.channel4.com - : Chandler's private dick Marlowe gets another cinematic outing, this time in the guise of Garner, who makes an affable-enough gumshoe. However, it's mostly of interest to martial-arts fans because it's Lee's Hollywood debut. When Garner is hired by a young woman (Farrell) to find her brother, he's soon dragged into a scam involving a TV star and some blackmail photos that suggests Farrell is not everything she seems. The direction by Bogart is solid rather than outstanding, but the supporting cast and Garner himself do a workmanlike job of maintaining the tension.  more...
