www.channel4.com - : And the horror short story film is never easy to get right. Probably the best of the lot is Dead Of Night, made by Ealing studios back in 1945. Get them all wrong and you are left with something that looks like stray episodes of 'Tales Of The Unexpected'. Get one wrong and you end up undermining whatever is good about the other episodes. Two of the parts here have some excellent things about them. 'Quitter's Inc', about a man who signs into a rather extreme clinic to help him stop smoking, is built around a vintage James Woods performance, a masterclass in a man becoming unhinged. And 'The Ledge', in which a gangster sets a sadistic challenge for his wife's lover, is a fine idea, even if it goes on a little long. The weak ending is provided by 'The General' - as the cat who has linked the stories together protects little Drew Barrymore from a troll. more...
