www.eonline.com - : It took two studios and an army of talent to bring sci-fi scribe Robert Heinlein's intergalactic war story to the big screen, but it was worth it. Director Verhoeven (Total Recall) and his frisky cast of TV hunks and babes actually exceed expectations, though it's not for everyone. The violence--with hordes of humans and alien bugs butchering each other in pitched battles--will have as many viewers wincing as whooping. Still, it's a clever comic book, with outstanding effects, moments of inspired sardonic humor and a woolly scenario that spins slightly out of control. Cocky lead Van Dien is a rich kid who volunteers as a grunt in mankind's space war versus the seemingly mindless bugs. Though the movie's internal logic is a bit shaky (machine guns are the futuristic weapons for exterminating giant bugs), this mammoth production is the most satisfying adventure film of the year. more...
