www.eonline.com - : Ambitious and provocative but disappointing compared to his best work (Wings of Desire), Wenders' latest try for a commercial film with artistic vision stars Pullman and Byrne as two important and stressed denizens of Los Angeles who traffic in images of violence. Pullman's a movie producer of commercial thrillers, and Byrne's an expert in surveillance employed in a secret project to place crime-spotting cameras around the city. The unwieldy scenario turns into a dubious conspiracy-theory mystery, squandering many intriguing secondary characters, including the producer's wife (MacDowell), an aspiring actress (Lind), a police inspector (Dean) and a gangsta rap music producer (Freeman). Alas, unique atmosphere, solid performances and profound discussions about the nature of our violent, technology-obsessed society don't add up to enough by the end of the movie. more...
