www.boxoffice.com - : David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of the 1958 Vincent Price film ''The Fly'' bears nearly no resemblance to its B-movie forebear, retooled in typically Cronenberg fashion as a very serious horror-comedy/horror-drama that manages to somehow always pull back at the right time, keeping audiences engaged even as they linger on the edge of nausea. It's crafty stuff, well-served by Jeff Goldblum's spectacular lead performance. The same cannot be said, sadly, of the Eric Stoltz sequel, a noble effort at remaking the 1959 sequel ''Return of the Fly,'' directed by effects-wizard Chris Walas, that too often relies on the ''more is better'' and ''don't follow in the footsteps of your father'' mantras, falling well short of the expectations established by its predecessors. more...
