www.filethirteen.com - : The script tries to have fun but only succeeds intermittently. There are some humorous moments, most of them supplied by Dianne Wiest as a Broadway grand dame, but overall the piece lags too much. Woody also throws in a story about gangsters, which collides with his story about the playwright in a quite interesting way, and a bit of homage to old gangster pictures as well. His best bit in this later arena is the use of a rather rotund black maid for comic relief. Her snide asides are quite humorous and nostalgic nods to the way blacks were used for comic relief in Hollywood in the early years. Unfortunately, Woody doesn't sideline the story often enough for humor like this. more...
