Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Guinness) has been so busy campaigning that he has neglected to disown his son and nominate the honest Livius as his successor. When he is murdered, the hedonistic son Commodus (Plummer) duly steps in and wreaks havoc - crucifying opponents, destroying homes and displaying the arrogance and cruelty that led to the Empire's decline. Not up to Mann's magnificent El Cid but still a sumptuous epic. Well acted - especially Mason and Plummer - and convincing, proving that Mann was a master of at least three genres. more...
