www.eonline.com - : This movie's heart is in the right place. Too bad the rest of it is all over the place. In a noble disappointment, esteemed director Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter) brings us back to the atrocious 1915 attempted genocide of the Armenian people by the Turks of the Ottoman Empire. Ararat's scope is massive, as Egoyan uses the making of a movie within this movie to educate us about the past, put it in today's context and tell the tangled story of modern-day 18-year-old David Alpay and his strained relationships with his mother and his girlfriend/stepsister (plus a bunch of other stuff). The wildly different storylines don't blend so well, and even the shocking parts--like the graphic footage of men and women being slaughtered--don't make strong connections. This catastrophe needs to be remembered, but there are better ways to do it. more...
