www.boxoffice.com - : When ''An American Tail'' was released in 1986, it represented a rare success for a non-Disney animated feature, confirming the stature of director and ex-Disney animator Don Bluth but also cementing the reputation of Steven Spielberg's Amblin', which produced the film for Universal. Drawing a line from that success to the burgeoning DreamWorks animation division, then, is fairly easy. So it's only proper that ''An American Tail'' finally be released on DVD. Unfortunately, the pressures of meeting certain specs for ''family-friendly'' DVD releases have taken their toll on the film which, along with its equally fine sequel ''An American Tail: Fievel Goes West,'' has been mastered full-frame. Fans will therefore have to pressure Universal to release widescreen versions of these films in much the same way they did with ''Babe.'' And there's no telling how long it may take for the studio to come to its senses and deliver. more...
