Overwiew :Jim Henson's Muppets make their film debut in this charming story that chronicles their rise to fame. It all begins with Kermit the Frog sitting in a swamp singing and strumming a guitar. Realizing he can use his talent to 'make people happy,' Kermit decides to head for Hollywood. During his trip, Kermit meets fellow Muppets Fozzie the Bear, the Great Gonzo, Miss Piggy, and an odd assortment of others who join Kermit on his song-filled journey. But before Kermit and friends achieve their dreams of stardom, Kermit must confront the man who's been trying to catch him since he left the swamp--a man who sees Kermit as a potential meal ticket.
THE MUPPET MOVIE is a lovingly made, touching story for kids of all ages as only Jim Henson could make it. The film includes clever, very funny cameo appearances by Milton Berle, Mel Brooks, Bob Hope, Cloris Leachman, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, and Orson Welles. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Song ('The Rainbow Connection'), Best Original Song Score. |

www.filmcritic.com - : Like most movies of its year, The Muppet Movie looks (and is) really dated. But it’s worth it to willingly suspend disbelief at how dated it is --- to appreciate the good-natured humor and comedic flair of Jim Henson. Henson tried to entertain both kids and adults, and though both audiences were probably easier to please in the days before all comedy became irony-soaked, Henson was one of the first to add sly postmodern touches. And while the movie promotes the annoying myth of Hollywood as the dream factory, magic store, etc. it more than makes up for it by borrowing comedians from several generations, from then-new comics like Steve Martin and Elliott Gould to veterans like Bob Hope and Orson Welles(!), for an endless string of cameo appearances. more...

www.boxoffice.com - : Even though the Muppets were already exceedingly popular in 1979 when Jim Henson decided to bring them to the big screen, there was considerable skepticism as to whether or not the whole concept would work in a large-screen format. Indeed, it did, spawning a host of sequels that continue to this day. The original ''The Muppet Movie'' shows a little bit of wear, unfortunately, and it's not Columbia's fault. The source print itself seems to have faded a bit or to have not been in that great a condition in the first place. This doesn't diminish the film's entertainment value any, and surely not for children. But it does call further attention to the host of celebrity cameos which date the film firmly in the '70s. If they're not deceased, like Edgar Bergen or Telly Savalas, they're extremely old, like Bob Hope, or else they look staggeringly young compared to the way they look now, like Steve Martin and Dom Deluise. Thanks to Paul Williams' wonderful song score, however, ''The Muppet Movie'' remains a timeless charmer for all ages and a truly indispensable hunk of American pop culture. more...
