The director himself plays Emil, the sort of dysfunctional New York intellectual that makes Woody Allen look like Sly Stallone. When he stumbles across loony Black, the unlikely pair form a reluctant mutual appreciation society to help them get over their numerous real and imagined problems. Jaglom has tried to repeat the formula several times, but Can She Bake a Cherry Pie? remains his most successful film, especially as brought to life by Black's utterly convincing and daring performance.
