Vanishing Point (1971)

Overwiew :Kowalski, the hero of the story, works for a car delivery service. He takes delivery of a supercharged 1970 Dodge Challenger to take from Colorado to Frisco, California. Shortly after pickup, he takes a bet to get the car there in less than 15 hours. After a few run-ins with motorcycle cops and highway patrol they start a chase to bring him into custody. Along the way, Kowalski is guided by Supersoul - a blind DJ with a police radio scanner. Throw in lots of chase scenes, gay hitchhikers, a naked woman riding a motorbike, lots of Mopar and you've got a great cult hit from the early 70's.

Starring : Barry Newman, Dean Jagger, Cleavon Little, Paul Koslo, Robert Donner

Directors : Richard C. Sarafian

Producers : Norman Spencer

  Critic Reviews  Grade
efilmcritic.com - : The subext, while a welcome respite from the non-stop driving sequences, is well-intentioned and periodically effective, yet often comes off as hamhanded - to say nothing of how painfully dated the film is. Still, Vanishing Point is an interesting little forgotten flick from the early 70’s, one that will most obviously appeal most to automobile aficionados.  more...
www.filmcritic.com - : A cult classic, Vanishing Point is a pre-Smokey and the Bandit road trip film with Barry Newman's benny-fueled driver attempting to get from Denver to San Francisco in one night. Considerably stilted and random, the movie is still gritty and mannish, though the jumble of side stories like an encounter with a travelling snake handler make the movie feel padded. Fun, though that ''surprise ending'' isn't exactly a shock or very satisfying.  more...
