www.moria.co.nz - : I was born in and grew up in New Zealand. It’s a country that has around the same landmass as the United Kingdom, yet only a population of 3.5 million. The whole country is really an overgrown smalltown. The filmic output of the country is almost entirely negligible - maybe 3-4 films per year and television production limited to a single teen soap opera (Shortland Street), plus maybe a sitcom and one dramatic series produced a year. Certainly for such a minuscule output the country’s film industry has had some surprising success stories - with directors like Vincent (The Navigator: A Mediaeval Odyssey, What Dreams May Come) Ward, Peter (The Lord of the Rings) Jackson, Lee (Die Another Day) Tamahori, Jane (The Piano, In the Cut) Campion, Martin (GoldenEye) Campbell, and actors such as Russell Crowe, Lucy Lawless, Kerry Fox, Anna Paquin, Temuera Morrison, Keisha Castle-Hughes and the late Bruno Lawrence. Of course Sleeping Dogs introduced two major talents that would go onto great success internationally - actor Sam Neill in his first screen performance and director Roger Donaldson (see below for his other credits). more...
