goatdog.com - : Badlands is nearly perfect in every way. The performances by Sheen and Spacek are both faultless. Sheen is by turns terrifying and infectiously likeable, giving the second best performance of his career (the first being Apocalypse Now). Spacek's creepily blasé innocence in the face of Sheen's violence is scary in itself. The picture was beautifully shot, Malick using the empty expanses of the Badlands to accentuate the moral emptiness of his characters and the society they weren't as different from as we would like to think.  more...  4.5/
www.toxicuniverse.com - : At any rate, Badlands is a solidly constructed film that’s aged rather well over the last 25 years. Spacek and Sheen’s performances are intriguing, Terrence Malick’s direction is fabulous (particularly for a first time filmmaker), and the film has a languid pace that essentially belies the urgency of the main character’s situation, Badlands is a monument to good filmmaking—and a gentle reminder that the 1950’s weren’t as innocent and pure a time as we’d like to think.   more...  4.5/
rogerebert.suntimes.com - : The movie is very reserved in its attitude toward the characters. It observes them, most of the time, dispassionately. They are strange people, as were their real-life models; they had no rationalizations like Dillinger's regard for the poor or Bonnie and Clyde's ability to idealize themselves romantically. They were just two dumb kids who got into a thing and didn't have the sense to stop.  more...  4/4
