Overwiew :Sydney Pollack directs Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand in this sensitive and moving tale of the romance of two individuals whose political ideologies are exact opposites. Streisand won an Academy Award nomination for her performance as Katie Morosky, a Jewish student radical who falls in love with Hubbell Gardner (Redford), a conservative privileged writer. The two interact from the beginning of their college courtship through the Hollywood-blacklisting era of the 1950s.

Starring : Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford, Bradford Dillman, Murray Hamilton, Lois Chiles

Directors : Sydney Pollack

Producers : Ray Stark

www.apolloguide.com - : Some movies just don’t stand the test of time. The Way We Were was a huge success in 1973, garnering the adoration of Streisand and Redford fans and six Academy Award nominations. But today, the film feels stilted, contrived and clumsy. Maybe it is the formulaic nature of the all-too predictable mismatched coupling of WASP-ish golden boy Robert Redford and Jewish princess Barbra Streisand. Perhaps it is the much too frequent 1970s montages of lovers frolicking on the beach, in a sailboat, setting up house, all to the sickly strains of music written by Marvin Hamlisch. More likely it is because director Sidney Pollack filled his picture with simplistically drawn characters, a plodding plot, strident themes developed through tedious arguments, and acting, particularly by Redford, that is decidedly prosaic.  more...  62
rogerebert.suntimes.com - : Barbra Streisand does it so well, it's almost unkind to wish for a change: She gives us bright, funny young girls who fall helplessly in love, in movies that seem to be about more than they are.  more...
www.mutantreviewers.com - : I've been interested in seeing The Way We Were for awhile now because there is an episode of Sex & the City where Carrie and the girls discuss Katy Girls. Carrie's boyfriend Big just left her for a girl that was easier to be with, someone who didn't challenge him as much as she did, someone with whom the relationship would not require work. Carrie is lamenting to her girls that it's just like in The Way We Were, where Hubbell and Katy can't be together because Hubbell can't handle it. And so Carrie divides the world in to Katy Girls and Other and so my curiousity about The Way We Were was piqued.  more...
