www.boxoffice.com - : Douglas Adams' much loved, vastly quotable, ever-evolving science-fiction satire -- first a 1978 BBC radio play, then a five-book ''trilogy'' and a 1981 six-part television serial -- finally arrives in film form. This latest edition again chronicles the attempts of bewildered British everyman Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) to cope when bureaucratic aliens destroy the Earth to make way for a hyperspace bypass. He is rescued at the last moment by a ''Guide'' researcher (Mos Def) who hitches them a lift -- and that's all before lunchtime. Arthur also meets the enormously egoed President of the Galaxy (Sam Rockwell); gets a second chance with a very nice girl (Zooey Deschanel); faces the question of Life, the Universe, and Everything; and struggles to find a proper cup of tea.  more...
www.eonline.com - : Don't panic...much. Over the years, Douglas Adams' sci-fi comedy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has been a radio show, a book, a BBC miniseries, a videogame, even a stage play. But they all told the hilarious tale of Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman)--an average Brit who inadvertently thumbs a ride around the galaxy after Earth is demolished to make room for an intergalactic highway--differently. So, geeks, you've gotta give Hollywood an inch for making your smart story a little dumber and playing up the love story (with Zooey Deschanel). The good parts? All of the actors, from the disheveled Freeman to the genius President of the Universe (Sam Rockwell), totally rock it. And while Marvin the robot will become a Disney marketing toy, Alan Rickman gets his digital depression perfectly. Luckily, whether a fan or a newbie, you won't feel over the moon (and beyond) after seeing it.  more...  B+
www.boston.com - : Don't panic: The long-awaited film adaptation of Douglas Adams's beloved science-fiction cult novel is not the disaster it might have been. There are inspired performances and belly laughs. Adams's tricky tone -- imagine the Pythons rewriting ''Star Wars'' -- has made it onto the screen. The answer to life, the universe, and everything is still 42.  more...  B-
www.accessatlanta.com - : It's as dreadfully off-key as David Lynch's Dune or Brian De Palma's Bonfire of the Vanities  more...  C-
