  Critic Reviews  Grade
www.filmjournal.com - : Film Journal International - The film starts off well enough, as it provides an intimate look into the working-class family life of the title character (Imelda Staunton), a relentlessly cheery fifty-something who works as a house cleaner for various rich folks, and thinks that all problems can be solved by a hot cup of tea.   more...  D
www.filmthreat.com - : Film Threat - ''Vera Drake'' should have been a compelling drama about the precarious state of women's health issues during a time when abortion was a crime. But the film's screenplay is thick with major lapses in logic, resulting in a story that ultimately makes little sense.   more...  C
www.filmcritic.com - : filmcritic.com - The scenes of Vera with her patients are truly gripping in their variety of clients, the reactions of these women making such a huge decision, and Vera’s steadying, empathetic nature. Instead of pushing some morality envelope of politics on the audience, Leigh wisely chooses to keep the much-debated operation within the confines of individual crisis.  more...  B
www.hollywoodreporter.com - : Hollywood Reporter - The film generated sustained applause at a press and industry screening in Venice. Audiences may be hard to come by due to the film's depressing subject matter but the rewards are many for those who admire the strict discipline of filmmaking driven by character and environment.   more...  A
