The civic holiday of Patriots' Day is a commemoration of the anniversary of
the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary
War. It is sometimes incorrectly punctuated Patriot's Day or Patriots Day. Patriots'
Day Minuteman is celebrated on the third Monday in April. It commemorates the
Battle of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. Patriots' Day Beating Drum
The Revolutionary War began there on April 19, 1775 and ended in Yorktown on
October 19, 1781 when Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington. A formal
treaty ending the war was not signed until 1783.
It is observed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and state of Maine (once
part of Massachusetts), and is a public school observance day in Wisconsin.

Observances and re-enactments of these first battles of the American Revolution
occur annually at Lexington Green in Lexington, Massachusetts, (around 6am)
and The Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts (around 9am). In the morning,
a mounted reenactor with State Police escort retraces Paul Revere's ride, calling
out warnings the whole way. This day should not be confused with Patriot Day, held on September 11 to mark the anniversary of terrorist attacks in the United States on that date in 2001.
