Columbus Day is celebrated in the United
States to honor Christopher Columbus's first voyage to America in 1492. Many
countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher
Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492 in the
Julian calendar and October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar, as an
official holiday.
Columbus Day honors the day Christopher
Columbus discovered America. The official holiday falls on October 12. As with
all Federal holidays, when a holiday falls on a Sunday - it is usually observed
on Monday. When it falls on a Saturday - the holiday is usually observed on
a Friday. Most schools hold programs and special events on that day.
