Wanda Sykes received a Bachelor of Sciences degree in marketing from Hampton University. She raised in the Maryland-Washington, DC, area. Her stand-up career began at a Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC, where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. She was ranked #70 in Comedy Central's 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time, the only Black woman to make the list. She worked as a procurement officer at the National Security Agency (NSA) at Fort Meade in Laurel, Maryland from college graduation in 1986 until 1992. She came out as gay on November 15, 2008, at a pro-gay marriage rally in Las Vegas hosted by the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) Center of Southern Nevada. At that rally, she also publicly announced for the first time that she has a wife, to whom she was married in California on October 25, 2008.

Wanda Sykes (born March 7, 1964 in Portsmouth, Virginia, also known as Wanda Sykes-Hall) is an African American stand-up comedian and actress known for her sassy personality and blunt observations on current events, the difference between the sexes and races and life in general. Much of her humor comes from her delivery, timing and distinctive voice, a loud, brassy instrument that adds an edge to her humor, as in this observation about white-collar corporate thieves: "You get mugged, you might lose what you got on that DAY. But I ain't never been mugged of my FUTURE." She is also a graduate of Hampton University in Hampton, VA. She has appeared in such films as Pootie Tang and on TV shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm; she starred in her own, short-lived Fox network sitcom, Wanda At Large, in 2003. The same year, Sykes appeared in an hour-long comedy special, Tongue Untied, that aired on Comedy Central. That network also ranked her number 70 on its list of the 100 greatest standups of all time. She has also served as a correspondent for HBO's Inside the NFL, hosts Comedy Central's popular Premium Blend, and provides the voice for a recurring character named Gladys ("There is a TURD on my back seat!") on Comedy Central's puppet show Crank Yankers. Sykes wrote Yeah, I Said It, a book of humorous observations on various topics, which was published in September 2004.
