Tim Henman Detailed Biography -
|
Tim Henman was born on the 6th September, 1974 in Oxford to Jane and Tony.
He first began to play tennis at the age of 3 and by 5 he had already decided that he wanted to make tennis his career. He attended Reeds public school in Cobham, and was coached at the nearby David Lloyd Centre by Tony Lloyd and Onny Parun. Between the ages of 10-17 he was a member of the David Lloyd Slater Squad. While still at school, he was diagnosed with the bone disease Osteochondritis Dissecans, a condition that resulted in a 9 month break from tennis. After becoming National Junior Champion in both singles and doubles in 1992, Tim Henman joined the Tour in 1993. Over the next few years he rose steadily through the rankings, breaking into the Top 200 in 1994, the Top 100 in 1995 and the Top 30 in 1996. 1996 was his breakthrough year, with Tim becoming British No 1. He reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and the semi-finals of 6 ATP tournaments. Tim ended the year winning the 'Most Improved Player' at ATP Tour Awards.
Tim Henman was elected onto the ATP Tour Player Council in 1996 shortly before he won his first ATP tournament in Sydney in January 1997. Elbow surgery put him out of action for 7 weeks, but he still made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. Another final appearance in Doha and 3 semi-finals in Nottingham, Basel and Vienna helped win him the runner-up prize in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. In 1998, Tim Henman reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, and won ATP titles in Tashkent and Basel. His consistent performances in the final half of the season resulted in him finishing the year in the Top 10 at No 7. His game, with a strong service and accurate volleying, is well suited to the grass courts of Wimbledon, but he has more than 'chip and charge' in his arsenal. His backhand has produced many winners and the great Pete Sampras has praised his natural talent. Away from the world of tennis, Tim is a superb golfer and supports Oxford United Football Club. He married Lucy Heald in December 1999 and currently lives in Barnes, London. The Great British public will always love Tim Henman, mainly because of his heroic performances at Wimbledon and in the Davis Cup.
