Steven Bauer Detailed Biography -
|
|
Steven Bauer (born Esteban Echevarria on December 2, 1956 in Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban-American actor.
Bauer in a promo stil from the 1983 movie Scarface
Born in Cuba, Bauer's family fled to Miami, Florida in 1960, following Fidel Castro's revolution in Cuba, when Esteban was three years old. Originally intending to become a musician, Bauer turned to acting while attending at Miami-Dade Community College and then transfered to the University of Miami, where he studied in the (see ]) Department of Theater Arts and performed at the University of Miami's esteemed Jerry Herman Ring Theatre.
Moving to New York City, Bauer studied under famed acting teacher Stella Adler and appeared in off-Broadway productions. He anglicized his name and took Bauer, the surname of his Jewish maternal grandmother, as his last name.
Bauer was given the substantial role of Manolo Ray in the 1983 movie Scarface, even though at the time he was a relatively unknown actor. The producers of Scarface were convinced that he was right for the role based on his strong audition, as well as his authentic Cuban background. His powerful and seductive performance drew a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Scarface has gone on to become one of the most popular cult films of all-time, depicting the drug trade of Cubans in Miami following the influx of Cuban immigrants to the area.
Since then, Bauer has appeared in such films as Primal Fear and Traffic.
Bauer married actress Melanie Griffith in May 1982; the couple divorced in 1987. Bauer married Ingrid Anderson in 1989. He has two children: Alexander Bauer, born in 1985, with Griffith, and another son, Dylan, with Anderson.
