Steve Landesberg (born November 23, 1945) is an American actor, comedian and voice actor. The role he is most recognized for is that of the intellectual detective Arthur P. Dietrich on the ABC sitcom, Barney Miller.
Landesberg was born in New York City to a milliner mother and a grocery store owner father. He has stand-up comic experience (notably, he was a member of the 'improv' group, the New York Stickball Team), and performed a few shows which were aired on cable shortly after Barney Miller ended its run. Landesberg is credited for quipping "Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense." Another amusing remark made in a 'bit' he developed: "How's your vindage?" (referring to a duck hunter who spoke Yiddish). He was also well-known for his skill as an impersonator — his Gregory Peck was particularly discerning and 'true'. Lately, he has appeared in movies and does voice work for animated features. He appeared in the 2008 motion picture Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
