Stephanie Allain (born October 30, 1959 in New Orleans, LA) is regarded as one of Hollywood's top producers known for championing projects and talent that break the mold.
Allain holds a B.A. in Literature/Creative Writing from UC Santa Cruz. She began her film career in 1986 as a staff reader at Creative Artists Agency and was admitted to the Story Analyst Guild the following year. As a story analyst, she worked for 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers and finally Columbia Pictures where in 1989 she was promoted to Creative Executive under Dawn Steel and Amy Pascal.
In 1990 she fought for fledgling writer/director John Singleton's, BOYZ N THE HOOD. The controversial film would become a critical and commercial hit garnering Singleton two Academy Award nominations.
During her stint at Columbia Pictures, Allain rose through the ranks to become Senior Vice President of Production (for a decade the highest post for an African American) and launched the careers of several young filmmakers including Singleton, Robert Rodriguez and Darnell Martin.
Between 1996-2000 as President of Jim Henson Pictures she produced Caroline Thompson's BUDDY, as well as Henson brand movies, MUPPETS FROM SPACE and ELMO IN GROUCHLAND.
After her stint at Henson, she joined 3Arts Entertainment where she developed projects for clients and produced Reggie Rock Bythewood's BIKER BOYZ. During this period, she began championing Craig Brewer's, HUSTLE & FLOW, eventually selling her house to help get it made. She teamed up with John Singleton to produce it as an independent film. Hustle & Flow was sold to MTV/Paramount for a whopping 9 million dollars and went on to win the Audience Award at Sundance in 2005, an Academy Award for Best Original Song and earned a Best Actor nomination for Terrence Howard.
That same year, Allain produced another first time director, video director, Sanaa Hamri's SOMETHING NEW for Focus Features.
She is partnered with Craig Brewer in their SOUTHERN CROSS THE DOG production company based at Paramount Pictures. In 2007 Paramount Vantage released their latest film, BLACK SNAKE MOAN.
She is married to composer Stephen Bray of Broadway's THE COLOR PURPLE.
